SCIENCE TASK FOR REVISION:
Neil heard that plants compete for space. He decided to test this idea. He bought a mixture of flower seeds from Kate the market gardener and some potting soil from Ian. Into each of the 5 plastic cups he put the same amount of soil. In the first cup he planted two seeds, in the second cup he planted 4 seeds, in the third cup 8 seeds, and in the fourth cup he planted 16 seeds. In the last cup he planted 32 seeds. After 25 days he began to read his observations and make tally charts to form the basis of his graphs.
- What is the purpose of this experiment?
- What are the independent and dependent variables?
- Write up the procedure for this experiment.
- Create a lab report using the format in your Science books. You will have to create the parts that are not provided.
Prep focus is on revision for exams. You need to continue to manage your time and your study direction. Keep your study calendar up to date so you can see the balance of revision.
English: Continue flag work ready for handing in on Thursday. Clear use of terms including referendum, design, cartography, creativity, scamper and flag choices need to be clearly identifiable in your work.
Maths: 8KJ maths - you must complete page 11 of the measurement booklet provided for study purposes. Extra direction, complete the word problems include your working out in your book.
Science: Research graphs. You will need to know what are the key components of graphs. Why would you choose a certain type of graph? How do you record data and ensure it is accurate?
# In your Science book you need to record five key components of graphs.
# Outline the different types of graphs and when you would use each one.
# Answer this question. What is error analysis?
The Science exam is in two parts.
Part One:
Scientific thinking, which is multi choice questions and has a background focus of reading questions critically, thinking scientifically and scientific literacy. All students sat a similar test in term two so they are familiar with the structure and style of testing.
Part Two: Lab report
This is based on the work completed in term three. The students will be given a short science scenario which they will unpack and create a Lab report.
The students have the two sheets of the lab report outline in their science books. They will need to revise the headings used in the report for both understanding and application in the scenario setting.

Welcome to term three.
Below is the outline for SCIENCE for all year seven and eights for term three. Teachers in charge are Tracey Kinloch-Jones (Year 8) and Neil McCorkell. (Year 7)
What is the purpose of the Science Badges?
• | To get students interested in and working on a series of sciences activities
• | As the activities are well within the capability of average students, they:
• encourage student initiative
• provide a tangible reward (metal badge and certificate)
• don't involve teachers in a lot of extra work
How does it work? | |||
• | Students choose a badge from a total of 29 available
• | An Activity Sheet for that topic is purchased
• | There are approx 47 points per sheet. The student must complete 20 of them
• | Teachers mark each task then sign the sheet once it has been completed
• | A badge and certificate is given to the student
When can students do the activities?
• | They should be done at home
• | Within 12 months is recommended for the badge
How much help should students be given?
• | The activities are designed for Years 7-10 and students should be able to work on them by themselves
• | Offer praise and occasionally some advice if there are problems
• | Encourage students to use a variety of sources to get information
What about the less able/very able students?
• | There is a varied menu of activities on each sheet to choose from
What does it cost? | |||
• | Students pay for their badge to their school Science coordinator
• | Costs are $6.00 for the badge and task sheet.
How can the student start?
• | Once a badge is chosen, click on the underlined name/badge and this will link you to a sample of the badge questions
• | Print out the sheet and give it to the student to start working on the badge
• | Collect the money for the badge and send away for the full activity sheet and badge
• | Teachers transfer the marked questions onto the full activity sheet and give the student the badge once it is completed |
